Whether you are an experienced tropical fish fan or just a beginner, you will enjoy the addition of tropical angel fish to your tank. They are pretty fish, easy to care for and come in several different colors.

Those Little Angels

Angel Fish are easy to find and easy to keep. They are fresh water fish and are compatible with Pleco, Blue Gourami, Opaline Gourami, Dwarf Gourami, Larger Tetras and Bala Shark among others. They like a large tank, preferring a tall one of 20 gallons or more. The temperature should be kept between 74 and 84 degrees with a pH of 6 to 7.5.

Tropical angel fish originally come from the Amazon River and have a life span of eight to ten. Keepers of tropical angel fish appreciate their sweet nature. However, angel fish are aggressive eaters; their keepers enjoy the way the tropical angel fish rush to the top of the tank when they spot a human approach. The warning that comes with that trait is that owners should make sure that the less aggressive fish in the tank get enough food.

Breeding

Angel fish pair off for breeding fairly early on. You may notice them picking a territory and defending it. You can remove a pair that seems intent on breeding to a smaller tank with a suitable breeding site. They will lay eggs on a vertical or diagonal surface. Increase the temperature to about 82 degrees and increase feeding. After about a week, you should be able to spot the swollen belly of one of your pair. After the eggs are laid, the male should try to fertilize them. The fertilized eggs may turn white.

If the breeding was successful, the eggs will hatch in three or four days. The parent tropical angel fish can remain with the little fish for a while. The new little ones can feed on recently hatched brine shrimp and micro worms. Once the babies begin eating, you can remove the parents whenever you want. After about two weeks, you’ll be able to recognize the babies as real angel fish. After that time, they will grow quickly and you will be able to feed them your preferred fish food.

The tropical angel fish is prone to the usual fresh water fish diseases. Learn the symptoms and watch for signs of a fish looking or acting differently. Your tropical fish pet store will supply the treatments for the normal problems. Like most tropical fish, the tropical angel fish benefits most from a knowledgeable attentive owner. A little care from you will pay off in a lot of enjoyment.
