Tropical fish may never have the same problem as humans in terms of being stopped at the border for not having proper identification or not having a passport, but tropical fish do have a form of identification that is worth a look and that can be helpful in determining the right care for the fish. Tropical fish identification is usually something that is specific to each individual fish, representing some spots on their bodies or a certain glint of color in their scaling. Regardless of the type of tropical fish identification, a little knowledge about it never hurt anybody and can prove to be quite helpful in terms of identifying the tropical fish we may be looking for.

In terms of tropical fish identification, it is good to determine what fish are great for living with in a community and what fish are not. That is always a good starting point if you are a beginner in the world of fish. There are lots of suitable fish types for this particular venture. A good starting fish for many is the barb type of fish. The cherry, golden, or five-banded barbs are usually identified by their incredible color and their size. They are quite small and spunky, but also very friendly. Measuring at about two inches each, the barb fish are easy to feed because they eat just about anything and can be identified by their color.

Identifying Other Fish

Another good tropical fish to start with is the rasbora. This little guy is commonly known as the Harlequin and is from Southeast Asia. They are quite small, about the same size as the barb fish at two inches, and are also peaceful community fish that are great for large open tanks with lots of plants. They work well with other fish as long as they are also small and not threatening. The Harlequin, like the barb again, eats just about anything from live food to flake food and is known by their groupings. They group together in shoals of eight or more and can be clearly identified in this group by the black extended region on the male and the straight edged portion on that region in the females.

Tropical fish identification is important on fish like the rasbora and the barb fish. Tropical fish identification is also important on the catfish types because there are several of them. There are a lot of different kinds of catfish that vary in range and type. They still have basically similar traits, however, and are known for being hardy and easy to breed. Identifying the different types of catfish can take some getting used to because there are so many of them, but they can be a very rewarding fish to have in your tank.
